Good morning everyone, Hero-Club is proud to present our latest interview with comic book writer Mairghread Scott. Recently, Mairghread was the lead writer for the VR Troopers mini-series which Boom! Studios released primarily last year. Then the title completed its six-issue run at the start of this year on January 21, 2026. However, the series is being compiled into a single trade paperback that is scheduled to release later this month. So, for those that missed the initial run there is another opportunity to read and own the series soon.
Now, to summarize the plot of the title, it is a reboot of the 90's television series produced by Saban Entertainment. Specifically, based on the characters' appearances within Boom! Studios' Power Ranger Prime series. Here, the VR Troopers exist in alternate reality where Earth has been colonized by an authoritarian-based Eltar. Additionally, the Troopers are a special unit for the Eltarian government fighting the rebel Power Rangers, and Grimlord's forces. However, this mini-series exclusively deals with the Troopers uncovering Grimlord's plot to rule multiple realities.
Anyways, our interview with Mairghread does not entirely rely on us discussing the main plot. Specifically, since we would like to avoid any possible spoilers outside of Hero-Club's previous reviews. As a result, our questions more or less dwell on the creative process behind this VR Troopers mini-series. So, without further ado let us begin our interview with the series' writer, Mairghread Scott!

Question 1: Before jumping into the crux of this interview about VR Troopers, is it okay to start with a few simple questions? Like how did you get into writing, and what made you choose comic books?
Mairghread: Oh, just that? No problem! I’ve always been in love with writing, especially genre fiction. I watched every superhero cartoon on Network TV (didn’t have cable), started reading manga; then my high school crush (now my husband) introduced me to American comics. In college and our broke 20s, comics were the one luxury we could afford so Wednesday afternoon became our date night. We’d swap our issues and daydream about the stories we’d create. I wanted to tell stories about heroes. About how hard it is to actually try to do good in this world. And to pair that with art?! Such gorgeous art? I had pages from comics pinned up in my dorm room, my apartment; I still have them in my office today. Comics for me are that perfect collaboration where art and words make something more than the sum of their parts. How could I write anything else?
Question 2: How did you get hired by Boom! Studios, and for those unaware what were your earliest titles for the publisher?
Mairghread: I think the first thing I ever wrote for Boom! was a short in an Adventure Time anthology. I’d been bugging every editor I could find on the convention circuit. (Which is a lie. I would find editors at conventions, but I was so terrified I only ever talked to them because my husband refused to leave the booth until I gave someone my card.) Anyway, Boom! generously let me help on a few properties and their Archaia imprint published my first original mini-series, “Toil and Trouble.” I’ve been impossible to get rid of ever since.
Question 3: You previously contributed to some of the Power Rangers titles released by Boom! Studios, which is a shared property with VR Troopers created by Saban Brands and now owned by Hasbro. Were you a fan of these properties prior to joining their comics’ teams? If so, what were your earliest memories pertaining to these brands?
Mairghread: I was a HUGE fan of Mighty Morphin growing up! I vividly remember one incident playing Power Rangers in elementary school; I was always the Pink Ranger (air superiority) and the Green Ranger kid had a crush on me, but I had a crush on Jason David Frank, and it was the point where the show was toying with a pink/green romance, and we were both way too young to handle that kind of metatextual dissonance, and… long story short, we got sent to the principal’s office for fighting, but I regret NOTHING! ~ What I mean to say is, I’m proud to have partnered with this fine, upstanding brand.
Question 4: Regarding the VR Troopers mini-series, it is a spin-off from Power Rangers Prime. Can you walk us through the process of how the title came to be? Was there a plan from Prime’s start even before you were selected to write VR Troopers, and/or what kind of input did you have?
Mairghread: The Troopers had already been set up as the antagonists for the Rangers when I got the chance to pitch for the series, but the actual plot of my miniseries was entirely left up to me. I’d sent over a couple of variations on a theme, and when we picked the present arc, I then partnered with Melissa Flores to make sure everything stitched together well. It was a really cool exercise for me because you don’t often get to write from the “bad guy’s” POV. But Melissa had done such a good job of humanizing everyone that I knew I could get the audience on Ryan’s side without having to justify everything he’d done.

Question 5: Did you need to do any research on the brand and what was that process like when it came to writing this VR Troopers mini-series?
Mairghread: God bless Youtube and the wiki. The research was simple: watch as many episodes as I could cram into my eyeballs, then cross-check everything with the wiki, then back to YouTube again, until you get all the details right. Finally, I really tried to think of how I would have seen VR Troopers if I had watched it as a child. I don’t think back on Morphin’ and remember reused footage. Your little kid brain stitches together any pieces that don’t quite fit, and I wanted to give the same respect to the Troopers. My goal was for them to feel as awesome as you remember them, but now facing problems that would be too adult for a kids show.
Question 6: Did you have a character that you were excited to write about when you initially started, then have focus change to another one during the production?
Mairghread: No. I always knew this had to center around Ryan, but I wanted to make sure everyone felt awesome and got their moment. Every hero is someone’s favorite and I wanted to honor that.
Question 7: What was it like working with artist Sebastián Piriz on this title, and what were your favorite scenes that he illustrated?
Mairghread: I LOVE Sebastián’s fight scenes! They are so kinetic! I’ve never seen an artist experiment so much with their panel layout. When I saw Ryan’s first fight sequence, my jaw hit the floor. After that, I tried to give Sebastián as much latitude as possible when it came to anything action. I really wanted him to have control of the pacing in those moments. By the time we got to the end, he was turning in absolutely stunning work.
Question 8: Were there any characters from the television series that you wish you could have adapted and used more freely?
Mairghread: There was only one thing I didn’t get to do that I really wanted to and that was to call out the fact that, in the original series, Professor Hart turns Kaitlin’s car into a flying super-car, but it still looks like a dumpy subcompact. I really wanted to call him out for giving her the best/worst car ever, but it just didn’t work with our story.

Question 9: With how the mini-series ended, would you be willing to write more VR Troopers comics in the future? And do you think it is possible for VR Troopers to continue seeing that Power Rangers Prime finished?
Mairghread: I loved writing the Troopers, and I’d definitely love to continue it. But whatever Boom! decides, I’m very proud of the work our whole team - on VR and Rangers - has done.
Question 10: Are there any upcoming projects that you can talk about, which fans should be on the lookout for?
Mairghread: Why wait for the future? I’m most excited about finally completing my latest creator-owned, a graphic novel trilogy - Sea Serpent’s Heir! It’s an epic fantasy about a pirate crew sailing with a girl destined to destroy the world! And the art, from the incomparable Pablo Tunica, is absolutely breathtaking. The best part is, it’s available right now!
So, that concludes our interview with writer Mairghread Scott on the recent VR Troopers mini-series released by Boom! Studios. As mentioned earlier, the series is receiving a trade paperback release soon, and it will be available later this month. Additionally for those interested in following Mairghread on social media, sadly she rarely uses it. As a result, most updates are through various interviews, her convention and signing appearances, or comic publishers. However, Hero-Club would like to thank Boom! Studios for having arranged this interview on our behalf. Nevertheless, to keep up to date with Hero-Club, we suggest that people should follow us across social media using @HeroClub4Life!
